Mode District Philadelphia is a shopping mall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.s.a., located in Center Urban center along Market Street. Information technology opened in 2019 on the site of a previous mall known as the Gallery at Marketplace Due east. The area was originally planned to exist an outlet mall to be called "Fashion Outlets of Philadelphia", but the plans were subsequently changed to be a new "retail district" consisting of clothing stores and a cinema. The new mall opened on September 19, 2019. Planners envisioned that Philadelphia, as the sixth largest city, did not have a major retail eye when even compared with Kansas Metropolis, the 37th largest city. The mall was envisioned to fill that "void" that even smaller cities take, to sell items to the Heart City market that had previously only been available elsewhere. Many of the new retailers planning to open have never had a presence in Eye City before.[ii] The Mode District Philadelphia currently has Burlington, Primark, AMC Theatres, and Round One Amusement equally anchors.

Prior to the Fashion District Philadelphia, the infinite was called The Gallery at Market E and was opened in 1977. It was later expanded equally Galleries I and II in the early 1980s. The Pennsylvania Existent Manor Investment Trust (PREIT) caused Gallery I in Apr 2003 from The Rouse Company and Gallery II in the third fiscal quarter of 2004 from the state's Public School Employees' Retirement Arrangement. The total circuitous measures approximately 1,100,000 foursquare feet (100,000 m2) of retail space and at its peak had over 130 stores.

Formerly, the space was anchored by Strawbridge's department store at eighth Street. It is also the main archway for SEPTA'southward Jefferson Station at 11th and 12th Streets. The mall also provides access to an underground concourse that connects to the Market-Frankford Line at its 8th and 11th street stations.

In September 2008, the developers of Foxwoods Casino Philadelphia changed their proposed casino location to The Gallery at Marketplace East after receiving opposition from residents nigh the original proposed site in South Philadelphia. The new proposal was endorsed by both Mayor Michael Nutter and Governor Ed Rendell. The original proposal for the Foxwoods Casino at The Gallery at Market East was for a 3,000-slot-auto casino on two floors that were occupied past Burlington, which would take forced that shop to relocate. However, on February 26, 2009, it was announced that the developers of the Foxwoods Casino were looking to locate their new casino on three floors of the former Strawbridge's.[3]

In January 2014, it was announced that Kmart would be closing its Gallery store in late April.[four] There are plans to turn the former Kmart space into multiple street-facing stores centered on an atrium and to redevelop the mostly-vacant peak level of the mall.[5] It was announced in April 2014 that Century 21 would open an anchor shop at the mall.[half dozen] In July 2014, Macerich caused a 50% stake in The Gallery at Marketplace East and invested $106.8 million to redevelop the mall in a joint venture with PREIT.[7] As of 2015[update] many stores in The Gallery, including nearly restaurant concessions, have closed in grooming for the renovation.[eight]

As of June 19, 2015, the $325 1000000 remodeling of "The Gallery" had been officially approved by the city council, and the legislation had been canonical by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. Sabotage started in Baronial 2015, with construction expected to last two years and a yard opening sometime in 2017.[9] According to the website for the Fashions Outlets of Philadelphia, the Burlington and Century 21 anchor stores will remain open during reconstruction.

In August 2017, the developers announced that outlets plan has been abandoned and the mall volition instead feature a mix of retail, entertainment, and dining venues, much to that of a traditional shopping mall. The mall volition effectively be renamed Fashion District Philadelphia. The opening of this movie theatre marked the beginning time since 2002 that Eye City Philadelphia had a multi-screen movie theater; Philadelphia had previously been the only major city in the Us without a multi-screen picture theater in the downtown area.[13] [14] On December 21, 2019, a Round 1 Entertainment bowling and entertainment center opened at Manner District Philadelphia.[15]

In October 2019, it was announced that Primark will open up a 34,200-square-foot (three,180 m2) store at Style District Philadelphia at the corner of 11th and Market place streets.[xvi] The store opened on September 16, 2021.[17] [18] Century 21 closed in 2020 as a result of the concatenation filing for bankruptcy and closing all stores.[19] [twenty]

After PREIT filed for bankruptcy in 2020, PREIT relinquished its primary command of Manner Commune Philadelphia on January 1, 2021, with Macerich controlling operations and making decisions concerning the mall. Macerich made a $100 million payment on a $301 million loan backed by Fashion District Philadelphia.[21]

On December 16, 2021, a Giant Heirloom Market grocery store opened in the basis level of the onetime Strawbridge'south section store at 8th Street.[22]
